Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@wagwormfarm.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Worm castings (also known as vermicompost) are the digested organic material produced by composting worms. As food waste and organic matter pass through their gut, it’s broken down by enzymes and beneficial microbes. The result is a microbially active, nutrient-dense soil amendment containing humic and fulvic acids, plant growth hormones (like auxins and cytokinins), and bio-available nutrients in stable, slow-release form.

Check out our Application Guide page for all of the many applications.

Compost relies on thermophilic (heat-based) decomposition, which kills pathogens and breaks down organic matter but also burns off many beneficial microbes. We feed that finished compost to the worms to create our worm castings while at ambient temperatures, preserving living bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and actinomycetes that improve soil structure and nutrient cycling.
They also contain more nitrates (a plant-available form of nitrogen), balanced calcium and magnesium, and higher cation exchange capacity — meaning soils amended with castings retain nutrients longer and release them more efficiently.

Castings improve plant health through several biological mechanisms:

  • Microbial diversity: Inoculates soil with beneficial bacteria and fungi that suppress pathogens like Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium.
  • Nutrient availability: Enzymes and organic acids convert locked-up minerals into soluble forms plants can use.
  • Plant hormones: Compounds produced during digestion (auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins) stimulate root elongation, shoot growth, and stronger cell walls.
  • Water retention: The humus content acts like a sponge, improving soil porosity and moisture balance.

Worm castings have a long residual effect — typically 2–3 months of active nutrient release, followed by long-term structural benefits. The microbial population establishes itself in the soil and continues to cycle nutrients even after the original castings have dispersed.

Yes. Castings are gentle enough for seedlings and powerful enough for vegetables, flowers, houseplants, and trees. They never burn roots and can be used year-round.

Once or twice a month during the growing season is plenty for most plants. For heavy feeders like tomatoes or peppers, you can apply weekly.

Keep them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Castings are alive with microbes, so don’t seal them airtight — allow some airflow to prevent moisture buildup.

Use worm tea fresh whenever possible. If you need to store it, keep it in a cool, dark place with the lid slightly open to allow a little oxygen flow, and use it within 24–48 hours.

Absolutely. They work great alongside organic or conventional fertilizers. Worm products improve soil biology, helping plants absorb nutrients more efficiently and reducing the need for chemical additives.

Yes! We offer bulk worm castings and worm tea for farms, nurseries, landscapers, and soil producers. Visit our Contact Us page for bulk pricing, delivery details, or refill options.

We do not offer online ordering at this time. We plan to implement this by summer of 2026 for local pickup orders. We do not plan to ship any products in the future as it jeopardizes the quality of the living biology after a few days in packaging.
